Satire
in Motion
Video allows Aalam to combine satire, performance and fiction to examine social and political realities. Blending humour with unease, his films transform ordinary situations into narratives that expose censorship, isolation, authority and the fragile balance between the personal and the political.
The Balcony Man
The Balcony Man Video series captures the frustration of being locked up at home because of a pandemic. The main character sits every morning on his balcony and lives adventures of a rather special kind.
Swim
Swim tells the story of a satirist living in the fictional dictatorship of ‘Kamalozten’. Confined in his apartment, the satirist produces work that he knows cannot be kept or shown. He is seen constantly erasing or hiding his satirical work. Swim is narrated in English and in Aalam’s invented language of ‘Kamalozteni’ which helps to underscore the absurdity of the subject of censorship and suppression.
